Sure, but I think the machine itself isn't to blame, it is the structure that allows the machine to act the way it does. And therefore it is possible to make adjustments to fix the problem without having to get rid of the machine.

Materialism, drummed into us by the corporate/capitalist machine has contributed to destroying our values. Religion has usurped true spirituality. The nun in "The Motorcycle Diaries" who refused food to those who didn't attend mass because "you have to feed the spirit before you feed the body," is a perfect example of the perversion of Christianity that has swept our country. It's not a big jump to our bombing and maiming hundreds of thousands of people to make them "free." I don't think human nature is to blame, but we are as a specie very malleable. Also, civics used to be a required part of the curriculum in school and now the kids are so ignorant. T.V. is another culprit, creating passivity and receptivity, rather than critical thinking. Whatcha gonna do? Sullivan for Senator!

Just to let you know, I posted this the day before the America For Sale report was published.

I thought it was quite a coicidence.

Also, for those unfamiliar with the report, it was originally published at Nancy Pelosi's democratic web site, but she caved under pressure from the republicans and pulled it. She didn't do the report. NO. Louis Slaugher (D-NY) did.

Thanks Nancy! Way to go.

Comment on An Evil Empire Wants Our Ports! by john

Just Mike, it's not a joke.
Let's get something straight: our security is very important and let us not forget that we have domestic terrorists as well.

The US is known around the world not just as a 'nice guy', especially in the Muslim communities.

My point is to make us think, and unless our ports are secured it doesn't matter as much who is actually running them. As an example, let us say a US based group wants to bring the US back into an isolationist, backwards, religious country. The easiest way for them to do this would be shut down international trade via the ports.

Just shutting the US ports for 2 weeks will shut down the global economy.

The Republicans have rejected every Democrat proposal over the last 4 years to increase the security for the ports. This is outrageous. We need 100% inspections of the cargo BEFORE it even gets to to the ports. Waiting to inspect it after the port has been destroyed won't help us.

Hey Angie, sounds like a fun place, I like that they don't have Coors there, especially after what Coors has done in politics. Yuck.

Do the meetings move around from city to city? Ever in SF?

Employee sounds like trouble. Nobody is irreplaceable; find somebody good.

The success of the company depends on getting and retaining good customers. This guy has questionable judgement and seems to be untrustworthy.

When hiring a replacement, keep this in mind: motivation matters more than experience; intelligence matters more than skills. Someone who really cares will impress customers and perform "over-his-head."

Good luck!

Enemies of democracy are not so much conspirators and opportunists. Nobody planned the last 50 years. Indeed, today's "leaders" don't even have the foresight to realize that their own descendents will suffer from the crimes they are committing today.

I'm not convinced the bad guys will win. While the "other guys" are detained, deported and tortured, most people don't much care. But tyrants tend to overreach, and if Iraq is hard to control, imagine a restive America—including the "gun nuts"—under tyrants who rule with an iron first, allegedly for our own good...

Of course, these tyrants may stumble out of power for it comes to that. I certainly hope so.
